Walking in the Footsteps of Vikings at Tissø

Just west of Store Fuglede, the landscape opens into a panorama that has drawn people for thousands of years. The Tissø routes at Fugledegård take you through one of West Zealand's most historically charged natural areas, where Viking halls once stood on the shore of Zealand's fourth-largest lake. Today, the area is an open meadow landscape with sweeping views across Tissø and the surrounding moraine hills. The route of approximately 5 kilometres makes for an excellent family walk with level terrain and plenty of places to pause along the way.

Fugledegård – Gateway to the Tissø Landscape

The starting point at Fugledegård on Bakkendrupvej serves as a natural base for the walk. From here, the path leads down towards the lakeshore, where the reed beds stretch along the water's edge, creating habitat for a rich birdlife. Tissø is known as one of Denmark's most important resting sites for migratory birds, and from the trails you can often observe swans, geese, ducks and birds of prey using the wet meadows and shallow lakeshore. Bring binoculars – particularly during the spring and autumn migration seasons, the species lists can be impressive.

The Viking Tissø

It is not only nature that makes the Tissø area unique. Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of a chieftain's estate from the Viking Age, and the landscape still bears the marks of the historical significance this area once held. As you walk along the lake, you pass the fields where researchers have found jewellery, weapons and ritual objects from the Iron Age and Viking period. The name Tissø likely derives from the Norse god Tyr, and the lake may have served as a cult site. These historical layers turn the walk into more than just exercise – it becomes a journey through West Zealand's deepest past.

Open Meadows and Quiet Waters

The route offers varied scenery despite the flat and easily accessible terrain. You walk through open meadow areas with scattered willow thickets, along ditches and canals that drain the low-lying land towards Tissø. On clear days, the sky mirrors itself in the lake surface, and the silence is broken only by birdsong and the wind in the reeds. It is a landscape that invites reflection and slow steps – perfect for those seeking a walk without steep climbs but with plenty of atmosphere.

Experiences Nearby

The Tissø area is centrally located in Kalundborg Municipality, and there are good opportunities to combine the walk with other experiences in the surrounding area. The town of Kalundborg with its iconic Church of Our Lady lies a short drive to the west, and to the north you will find the Røsnæs peninsula with its dramatic coastal landscape. The area around Store Fuglede also offers quiet country roads and small local farm shops well worth discovering.
