Few places in West Zealand deserve to be explored on foot quite like Skælskør. This small market town on the inner fjord has preserved its medieval street layout, and the walking route around Skælskør Inderfjord offers an intimate encounter with both the town’s history and the calm fjord landscape that has defined it for centuries. The route is just 3.5 kilometres long and follows a loop starting and ending at Havnepladsen — right where Skælskør’s pulse has beaten since the Middle Ages.

Havnepladsen and the Old Town Centre

The starting point at Havnepladsen is worth a visit in its own right. Colourful houses line the quayside and reflect in the still fjord water, while small fishing boats rock gently at their moorings. From here, the path follows the waterfront, and you quickly sense why Skælskør has always been a harbour town at heart. Algade, running parallel to the fjord just a few steps away, is one of Denmark’s best-preserved medieval trading streets — a network of small squares and corners that invites a detour.

Along the Fjord Shore

Leaving the dense old town behind and following the path along the southern shore of the inner fjord, the landscape opens up. Reeds and low willow scrub border the water’s edge, and in the quiet morning hours you may spot grey herons standing motionless in the shallows. The fjord is part of a larger fjord system stretching out towards the Great Belt, and on clear days the coastline of Agersø island is visible in the distance. The path is flat and well-maintained, so even small children in pushchairs can join without difficulty.

A Living Bird Reserve in the Middle of Town

Skælskør Inner Fjord is a surprisingly rich bird area. Mute swans, mallards, coots and great crested grebes are among the permanent residents, and during migration periods rarer visitors appear. The birdlife is so close that you almost forget you are walking on the edge of a town. For families with children, the fjord shore is a natural classroom where little ones can count ducklings and watch the large swans that often come right up to the path.

The North Side and the Green Belt

The route crosses to the northern side of the fjord, where green spaces and small park strips offer the chance to pause on a bench with a view across the water. This area is quieter than the harbour side — a good spot to sit down with a coffee you brought along and let the calm sink in. Small grassy areas along the path are well suited for a quick game or a picnic stop, and the combination of distant town sounds and birdsong in the foreground creates a very special atmosphere.

The final stretch of the loop leads through small residential streets back towards Havnepladsen. Along the way you pass several of Skælskør’s characteristic half-timbered houses and the small courtyard gardens that still define the town centre. The route is ideal as a gentle morning walk or a relaxed afternoon stroll, and at just 3.5 kilometres it is manageable for most age groups.
