A Wetland with a Thousand Years of History

Many of the most significant archaeological finds from Denmark's early Stone Age originate here — and although the artefacts now reside in museums, you can still sense the past when walking along the low paths and gazing across the flat, waterlogged terrain where hunters once roamed.

Conservation Grazing and Biodiversity

Large parts of Lille Åmosen are managed today through conservation grazing with hardy cattle breeds such as Galloway and Highland cattle. The animals roam freely across the meadows, keeping the landscape open so that rare meadow plants, amphibians and wading birds can thrive. In spring and summer, the meadows hum with life — skylarks sing above the open fields, and with a little patience you may spot lapwings or redshanks at the shallow pools.

Lille Åmosen forms part of Åmosen Nature Park, one of Zealand's largest contiguous natural areas. The nature park stretches across the municipal boundaries of Kalundborg, Holbæk and Sorø, offering a network of hiking trails through bog, meadow and woodland. From Lille Åmosen you can continue towards Store Åmosen or follow the paths along Halleby Å, which winds westward to Lake Tissø and the Great Belt. The terrain is flat and easy to navigate, making it suitable for families with pushchairs or those with limited mobility on the firm paths.

Birds and Wildlife All Year Round

The wetlands of Lille Åmosen attract a rich birdlife. In winter, geese rest in large flocks on the flooded meadows, and during migration periods you may see raptors such as white-tailed eagles and red kites circling above the bog. Roe deer inhabit the groves of birch and alder that fringe the meadows, and in the evening you might catch a glimpse of a fox slinking along the ditch bank.
