A forest walk with lake views near Jyderup

Skarresø Rundt is one of the most beautiful circular hikes in Northwest Zealand, where the trail winds through ancient deciduous forest along the shores of the deep, clear Skarresø. The route of approximately 7 kilometres starts and ends at Skarresøvej near Jyderup and offers a varied hiking experience, where the beech canopy mirrors itself in the lake's glassy surface.

Terrain and route

The path follows the lakeshore through hilly moraine landscape with gentle slopes and deep ravines. The surface alternates between forest floor, narrow footpaths, and shorter stretches of gravel track. At several points the forest opens up, offering unobstructed views across the water, where on still mornings you can watch the mist lifting from the lake. The route is well-marked and easy to follow, though the undulating terrain makes it slightly more challenging than the flat coastal walks further west.

Nature and history of Skarresø

Skarresø is one of the deepest lakes on Zealand, with a maximum depth exceeding 20 metres. The clear water owes its transparency to the sandy bottom and limited nutrient inflow from the surrounding woodland. The lake is enclosed by protected forest that has remained relatively undisturbed for centuries, and the biodiversity is remarkable. Rare fungi species grow on the old beech trunks, and in spring the forest floor is carpeted with white anemones and wild ramson, its scent carrying all the way to the trail.

Birdlife is rich around the lake. Kingfishers are regularly spotted along the shore, while redstarts and tree pipits sing in the canopy above. In autumn, greylag geese and tufted ducks move onto the lake, and the water surface hums with activity in the early morning hours.

Atmosphere and seasons

Skarresø Rundt has a distinctive atmosphere that shifts character with the seasons. In spring, the forest floor explodes into green, and birdsong drowns out everything else. Summer's dense leaf canopy creates a shaded, cool refuge even on the hottest days. Autumn transforms the woods into a display of gold, orange, and deep red, with fallen leaves crunching underfoot. Even winter walks have their charm, when the bare trees reveal views across the lake that are otherwise hidden behind foliage.

Practicalities and access

The route is suitable for walkers in reasonable fitness. The hilly terrain and narrow paths make it less suited to pushchairs and wheelchairs, but older children with hiking experience can manage the walk without difficulty. Dogs are welcome on lead. Parking is available at Skarresøvej, and the route can be walked in either direction. Allow one and a half to two hours at a leisurely pace with stops to enjoy the views.

Jyderup lies just a few kilometres from the starting point and offers shops and restaurants for after the walk. To the north you will find Dragsholm Castle with its historic garden and gourmet restaurant, and to the west the Lammefjord opens up with its distinctive fields where rows of carrots stretch to the horizon.
