Walking in the highlands

Stage 4 of the Gudenå Trail takes you through one of the highest-lying areas in Denmark. In the hilly landscape around Underup, there are many burial mounds which were deliberately placed high up – both so the deceased would be close to the gods, but also so the mound could be seen from afar. On this walk, you will pass close to these mounds, while the route also takes you through forest and along country roads.

About the route

This stage is 10 kilometres long. It can be divided into three sections. The first section (if you are arriving from the south) follows the country road from Brestenbro and passes close to Nim. The second section takes you through nature trails and gravel roads around Underup. The third section continues along the road through Træden Forest to The Uncovered Bridge. On stage 4, the route does not go all the way down to the river, so there is no risk of flooding. Midway between Underup and The Uncovered Bridge, you will pass through a private forest. As it is private, please keep to the paths and avoid staying in this forest.

You can also choose to explore the area around Underup by following the routes marked with yellow. From the Gudenå Trail, there is a 4-kilometre circular route through Underup Watershed (Underup Vandskel). From Underup, you can take signposted walks along trodden paths through Vorbjerg Høje and Slaggård Banke, here you can see the area’s many burial mounds.

Transport and accomendation

The route begins at Gudenå Camping, which is also an ideal place to stay overnight – either in a cabin, a room or your own tent. There is a café on site, as well as a small shop where you can stock up on the most basic supplies.

Near the start of the stage, you will also find Nim Canoe and Shelter Site.

Near the end of the stage, The Uncovered Bridge, lies Vestbirk Camping, which offers accommodation in cabins, safari tents or your own tent that you have brought along.

You can get to Brestenbro by bus 110, which runs between Horsens and Silkeborg. The bus also stops in nearby Nim, where there is a grocery shop. Bus 112 runs between Horsens and Vestbirk, which is very close to The Uncovered Bridge. If you need transport between two points along the route, you can book a flex ride. A flex ride must be booked two hours in advance and can be booked via Rejseplanen. Simply search for departures between the two locations, and a flex ride will be suggested if no bus services are available.

During the summer period, it is possible to take the free bus, Modstrømsbussen, which runs once daily in a southbound direction and stops at campsites and tent sites in the area. The bus stops at both Vestbirk Camping and Gudenå Camping.

Alternatively, you can use the digital map on oplevgudenaa.dk/en/, where you can, among other things, check the flooding status and find inspiration for your trip. On the OplevGudenå website, you can also find inspiration for the hike and experiences along the way.
