Domkirkemuseet – Hidden Stories Above the Royal Tombs
Domkirkemuseet is located above the royal tombs in Roskilde Cathedral and offers a fascinating journey through the cathedral’s and the city’s history from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The museum features unique rooms and objects that tell stories of monarchs, chivalric orders and the cathedral’s role in Danish history.

At the heart of the museum is the so-called Knight’s Hall, one of Denmark’s best-preserved medieval interiors, originally created as a meeting hall for a chivalric order that later became known as the Order of the Elephant. Highlights include a replica of Queen Margrete I’s golden gown and other significant artefacts that provide insight into both ecclesiastical and national history.
Unique Rooms and Historic Narratives
The museum is housed in St. Canute’s Chapel (Christian I’s Chapel), where the original architectural details create an authentic medieval atmosphere. A visit connects the exhibitions with their historic surroundings and offers a deeper understanding of Roskilde Cathedral’s importance through the centuries.
