Fodsporet between Dalmose and Skælskør – 11 km cycling route through the heart of West Zealand

From the small railway town of Dalmose, the Fodsporet trail runs southwest through a landscape that changes character several times over the 11 kilometres down to Skælskør. The route follows the disused railway line, and although the tracks were removed long ago, you can still sense the old alignment in the terrain – straight stretches interrupted by gentle curves that wind around hills and hollows.

The landscape along the route

Between Dalmose and Skælskør, the West Zealand farmland unfolds in a calm, rolling terrain. Before getting on your bike, it is worth looking around the small town, which still has a grocery shop and places to eat.

Skælskør – route finish at the fjord

At the other end of the route, Skælskør awaits with its cosy harbour, colourful half-timbered houses and the narrow fjord that cuts through the town. Arriving in Skælskør after a ride through the open countryside feels like a reward. The harbour area invites you to take a break with views across the fjord, and the old streets offer cafés and small shops. Skælskør has a unique atmosphere that blends maritime history with modern town life in an unhurried way.

The Fodsporet between Dalmose and Skælskør is part of the larger Fodspor network connecting several West Zealand towns via disused railway lines. The route is signposted and can be ridden in both directions. The surface is predominantly firm gravel, suitable for most bicycle types including ordinary city bikes and cargo bikes. The route is accessible year-round, but spring and summer offer the most beautiful experience with green fields and long, bright evenings.
