Coastal walking at Stigsnæs

Southwest of Skælskør, the Stigsnæs peninsula juts out into the Great Belt, and here you will find Lodshusstien — a 7-kilometre circular route that follows the coastline past the old pilot house and on through a landscape shaped by wind, sea and wild nature. The trail is named after the historic pilot house that once played a central role in navigating the narrow waters of the Great Belt, and which still stands as a landmark at the tip of the headland.

The coastal landscape and views across the Great Belt

The first thing you notice on Lodshusstien is the view. From the trail's highest points, you can look out across the Great Belt to Funen and Langeland, and on clear days the Great Belt Bridge stands out sharply against the horizon. The shoreline here is raw and unpolished — no sandy beach for swimming, but instead a stony coast, coastal bluffs and wild vegetation battling the salt wind. It is precisely this ruggedness that gives the place its distinctive character and attracts walkers seeking something more authentic than well-trodden tourist paths.

Shorebirds such as oystercatchers, terns and gulls keep to the water's edge, and during migration season you may spot large flocks of waders resting on the shallow flats. Bring binoculars — this is a fine birding area that many locals know but that remains surprisingly unknown to visitors.

The old pilot house and maritime history

The pilot house at Stigsnæs has a long history tied to the Great Belt's importance as a shipping route. For centuries, it was essential to have local pilots who knew the currents and shoals, and the pilot house served as their base. Although the pilotage service has since been modernised, the building still stands as a reminder of a time when life on the headland was governed by the sea and the weather. Walking past the pilot house on a windy day, with waves breaking against the rocks, gives you a tangible sense of the isolation and the hard existence that was once daily life out here.

The route and terrain

Lodshusstien covers 7 kilometres and runs as a circular route, so you finish where you started. The terrain is moderately undulating with some climbs along the coastal bluffs, but the route requires no particular fitness level. The surface alternates between firm gravel paths, narrow trails and grassy stretches, and after rain some sections can be soft. Good walking shoes are recommended. The route suits couples and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy coastal air and a walk with a bit of distance, but it can also be done with older children who have experience on nature trails.

From Stigsnæs, it is a short drive to Skælskør, where you can enjoy the harbour atmosphere and the small shops in the old town.
