The Danes spend more money on organic food than any other Europeans and Denmark’s many organic farmers have very efficient distribution networks, which allow farm-fresh produce to reach consumers fast and easy. And the national eco-labelling system is rigid and more comprehensive than the EU eco-labelling system. This is why organic produce enjoys a high level of trust in Denmark and why many supermarkets are well stocked with organic foodstuffs. But this is also why farmer’s markets and traditional market days are relatively rare in Denmark. The food festival tradition is nonetheless ever-growing. Nationwide, there are annual events that spotlight local culinary traditions and prime regional produce – and offer family activities and entertainment. Many of these festivals are held in historic locations, such as castles and manors – and in the authentic setting of island orchards and farms.
